A silly little Facebook… Bug?

Check out the update below.

A friend of mine posted a status update with something rather interesting. According to the status, you were able to find out the name of your phones sim card by typing in a simple “code” to the comments box of any type of post. All you had to do is type in the following;

@[123:0]

Replace the numbers “123″ with the last three numbers of your telephone number. I tested it out and indeed it work. It changed @[854:0] into Ashley Nathanson. Kind of odd, but what ever. I then started to wonder if it would work with other numbers. It did. It worked with almost any number abover 110. It even worked with 4 digit numbers and so on.

Im not sure if this is a bug, or if Facebook knows about this, but I thought I would share it with you. Check out the video below to see me doing it on one of my photo comment boxes.

HTC Desire Camera Bug

If you have a HTC Desire and have used the video feature of it and noticed that your video becomes all messed up? For example, when recording video on my phone, the image tends to be purple one half of the image is “magically” moved to the other side of the screen.

It turns out that this may well be a software conflict issue, and there is an easy way around this problem. If you, like me, live in a city where it is hardly covered by 3G or faster, you are limited to using the GSM network to establish your internet connection. Using this GSM connection while your camera is active causes a software conflict some how.

The best solution to the problem is to either switch off your GSM connection or switch to 3G or WiFi. I have done numerous tests with my camera and have noticed that it does not have any issues when my GSM connection is not active.

Unfortunately this issue is not localised to one particular version of Android on the HTC Desire. I was having the same issues when I first got my phone. It was using Android 2.1. Tthe issues continued through 2.2 and 2.3 also. Unfortunately, HTC are no longer going to update the Desire, so a permanent solution will not be found.

If you have this same issue, have you found any other solutions? Has solution I have provided worked for you?

Crysis 2 PC Gameplay Demo

I managed to finally create an account on MyCrysis.com and play the game. My system doesn’t exactly match up to the game developers requirements ( I will list them below ), but it plays like a dream. The specifications are much higher than Crysis 1 and that doesn’t play too well on my PC so I wasn’t hoping for much with Crysis 2.

My system specifications

  • OS : Windows XP
  • Processor : AMD Athlon 5600+ x2 @ 2.8ghz
  • Memory : 3.25GB
  • Video Card : Asus Nvidia 8800GT 256mb
  • Hard Disk : I have plenty, not to worry there!
  • Sound : Onboard
  • DirectX : 9.0c

Crysis 2 System Requirements

  • OS: Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, with the latest Service Pack
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo at 2Ghz, or AMD Athlon 64 x2 2Ghz (SUBJECT TO CHANGE), or better
  • Memory: 2GB
  • Hard Disk Space: 9Gb (SUBJECT TO CHANGE)
  • Video Card: NVidia 8800GT with 512Mb RAM or better, ATI 3850HD (SUBJECT TO CHANGE) with 512Mb RAM or better
  • Sound: DirectX Compatible Sound Card
  • DirectX®: 9.0c

When game developers give out system requirements to the public, they don’t tend to state whether they are minimum or recommended. As this is not stated with Crysis 2′s requirements, I will assume they mean minimum requirements. If this is the case, then my system doesnt make the cut what so ever! As you can see, I have an old system, but I would call it an average system, but is rapidly becoming unable to play the latest games.

As I stated above, even though I don’t exactly make the cut, the game plays beautifully. I average around 50 – 60 frames per second, which is pretty damn good for a game thats not even released yet!

Call of Duty: Black Ops AI Bug

Once again I am pissed off because of Call of Duty: Black Bug Ops. Before today I have not bothered to play through single player because of the amount of bugs that the game has. Today I thought “fuck it, I’m going to have a go!”

I loaded up the game, sat through the annoying torture cut scenes only to get to an area of the game right at the beginning where I am unable to go any further.

You would think that it was a simple little bug that the AI can’t handle and restarting the area where this happens would be the solution, but no! It keeps happening over and over again!

Eventually after around 40 minutes of trying to get the AI not to get stuck, I eventually found a way. I have to run way ahead of the AI and make sure I killed everyone very quickly and then I finally managed to get past it and on to the next level.

These bugs should not be in the game. Its a simple AI problem. From what I remember, with most AI systems, you have to program a path way for them to follow, or “areas” where they are allowed to be. Surely this wshould not beyond the capabilities of the developers?

Twitter for Android Version 2.0

Good news for the Android users out there. Twitter has just announced that it has released an update to it’s official application for the Android platform. Twitter for Android v2. It seems that they have made a radical change to their application. It now resembles what once was Tweetie on the iPhone, which Twitter aquired some time ago now ( 1 month after I purchased it, they made the damn thing free! ).

Anyway, lets get to the real purpose that this post is being written for. It’s to blatently call the re-vamped application crap. Of course though, it does have some good features which I will outline, but ultimately, it is still far from being a “good” application!

Good points

  • Coarse GPS now works
  • Image upload gives progress
  • Image upload is easy
  • Fantastic new layout
  • Easy to switch between different tabs – ie home, replies, DMs etc
  • Easy to mention other users through “twitter address book”
  • Easy timeline manual refresh by pulling down on timeline like on iOS version

Bad points

  • Links are not distinctive in home view
  • No possibility of multiple accounts
  • Widgets are complete shite
  • Cannot view profile pictures
  • No image resizing options for uploading on slow connections
  • No support for moving to SD card
  • Camera activation is very slow
  • Profile images on tweets tend to dissapear on slow connections
  • No option to turn off image previews
  • No option to view images in app after clicking image link
  • No visual aid to see number of unread tweets unless notifications is switched on
  • When taking an image, the image size of said image is not reported as it is when just attaching one

Call of Duty: Black Ops 1.06 Patch Live Now!

Treyarch have finally released their 1.06 patch for Call of Duty: Black Bug Ops. Unfortunately it’s not the update I was expecting. Treyarch keep releasing a large “in progress” list and then only do a few updates at a time.

Fair enough, they are now starting to fix the bugs with Black Ops, but why keep promising that they are going to give us features that have been in the Xbox 360 version for some time now! I was really looking forward to the dolly cam and the fix for the red diamond that appears when in the Gunship, Valkyrie Rocket and Chopper Gunner.

  • Backward compatibility for films created before Patch 1.05
  • Issues with weapon purchases after prestiging in some cases
  • Leaving a server and joining a different server, could briefly show the Map of the previous server
  • Duplicate player name on a server now becomes playername+slotnumber instead of ‘Unknown Soldier’
  • During a ‘Demolition’ match, the ‘Auto-balancing teams’ options may cause a ‘Defender’ player to respawn with a ‘Bomb’ icon in his inventory
  • Minor Shader Warming speed increase
  • One In The Chamber no longer counts democlient as a live player
  • 16x AA menu option for compatible graphics cards
  • Additional Stability improvements

There are still a few bugs with Black Ops which have not been addressed in the latest patch. A few of these are listed below,

  • You can now play older theatre recordings
  • Maps now load quicker than before with Shader Warming on, although not significantly
  • The stutter when leaving a map has still not gone
  • Kill-cam slow-mo has still not been re-instated
  • Cannot choose class when map is in pre-match mode after pressing escape
  • Game still has random crashes under certain circumstances

Anyway, the patch has now been released. Lets just hope they have fixed more things than they broke / not fixed!

Steams New Feature!

Valve announced on the 1st Febuary that they have released a new feature for steam. Although in beta, it’s sure to become popular quite quick.

Once you have signed up for the Stean beta, all you have to do is press f12 in any game to take the screenshot. Once taken it will be uploaded to your Steam community page with an option to add a caption.

This should be a welcomed new feature to Steam, as the only way to take screenshots and upload them on the fly is using an application such as Xfire. With Steam intruducing this feature, now eliminates the need for Xfire for such things.

The next logical step after completing this stage would be to introduce video recording in partnership with Youtube. Record the video with Steam, compress it ( with various options for HD and lower resolutions ) and then upload to the users Youtube account.

This is how it looks on the Steam overlay when screenshots have been taken!

There are however a few bugs that need to be fixed in the upcoming releases of this new feature. Some of which are listed below.

I look forward to seeing how this turns out as it has great potential for integration into the steam store, allowing a games users to essentially advertise the game they are playing! Mean while, you can check out the screenshots that I have taken.

EA / Crytek Encourages Piracy?

All along I have been saying to everyone that the gaming industry is full of shit and that they are the ones to blame for the majority of the piracy that goes on.

Today EA have released a new video of their upcoming game Crysis 2. The video is to demonstrate the multiplayer aspect of their game and to advertise that there is a multiplayer demo being released for the Xbox 360 platform only!

If you read my other post regarding the gaming industries claim of losing money to piracy, you will see that this could all be avoided very simply. All they have to do is release that demo on the PC and the Playstation 3 and what ever other platform that the game is going to be released on.

DSi / DSi XL – An error has occurred!

I know that some people seem to be having the same problems with the DSi and the DSi XL as I have been with my sons. I am writing this post as a possible solution for anyone who has encountered the same problem as myself.

Well, lets describe the problem. Turn on the DSi / XL and then load any app and you get the following error message

An error has occurred. Please press and hold the POWER Button to turn the system off. Please refer to the Nintendo DSi Operations Manual for details.

I phoned Nintendo as the DSi XL was second hand and didn’t have the Manual, but they had two solutions to this problem;

  1. Turn off the WiFi
  2. Turn off the DSi / XL and take the battery out for approximately 10 minutes then replace

The first thing I tried was turning off the WiFi. The problem went away completely, but it meant that my son was unable to upload his pictures to Facebook or use anything that required having the WiFi on so this solution was unacceptable. I then proceeded to try Nintendos second solution, take the battery out. When I did this, I completely forgot about it and left it out for around an hour, so this should definitely of worked. No, nothing.

I then took it back to the shop and got a refund and decided to buy a brand new one from a different shop, only to get it home and find that it had the exact same problem. Could the problem really be with both devices? I then took this back and got it replaced. This time I checked it in the shop on my phones WiFi and low and behold it worked perfectly!

I was finally thinking, wow it’s about time this bloody thing worked! Got home and tested it out some more and set it up properly for my son, and the second that I launched the camera it crashed on me! So I thought to myself, why is it only happening here because it worked fine in the shops and at his nan’s house.

So, being the clever fucker than I am, I devised a plan of turning off everything that emits some sort of electrical signal, for example, cordless phones, router etc. So I turned everything off, and one by one, turned it back on. It turns out that I really am clever and I figured out what is causing the problem every time the WiFi is on.

I have a device that allows me to transmit my Sky TV from down stairs to the TV in my bedroom. Now I don’t specifically know why it is causing the problem, but it does run on the same 2.4GHz frequency that WiFi does. Turning this thing off has eliminated any problems that we have with my sons DSi XL. This is not too much of a sacrifice as it only gets used during the night time.

I can tell you how ever the device I have is an X-Sender dg180-s lr150-s and you can get the technical spec for it ( PDF ) http://aei.eu/wp/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Manual_DG180GB_Web1.pdf . If you have anything like this I would recommend turning it off and then testing the DSi / XL to see if it eliminates your problem.

Note : This is only a suggestion and may not work for you. It is also recommended that you try other devices that might emit an electrical signal if you don’t have one of these!

Call of Duty: Black Ops 1.04 Patch

Finally the PC version of Call of Duty: Black Ops has been updated. As I suspected, there has been some improvements in the way the game plays. I have been saying all along that the problems were not with my computer and that the “minimum systems requirements” were all complete bullshit!

Any way, enough of me chatting crap. The change log is below as posted by GameServers.com

  • Improved threading performance on computers with only 2 cores.
  • Additional performance optimizations
  • Added an option to pre-cache all shaders during load time. This fixes hitching related to shader compiling on some video cards when viewing an area of the map for the first time.
  • Fixed random freezes in certain computer configurations.
  • Allow Team Change on Ranked servers when it does not unbalance teams (this is a server admin option).
  • Allow Team Change grace period at start of match (server admin option).
  • Added 4 more reserved slots (server admin option)
  • /connect
  • Improved quickmatch results (server side change)
  • Fix for watching films through Combat Record
  • Fixed compassSpectatorsSeeEnemies exploit
  • Fixed 3rd person fov exploit
  • Fix for infinite supply drop exploit.
  • Fixed crosshair flickering when stereo is active.
  • Various spawn improvements
  • Various sound improvements
  • Fix for Zombies – Teammate shadows not displayed properly.
  • Fix for radar not staying on in One in the Chamber when it should.
  • In a Domination match, the Position Secured medal is no longer delayed.
  • ‘Hardened: Equipment Shot’ Challenge can now be completed by destroying a ‘Camera Spike’.
  • Fix for choppy final killcam in dedicated servers.
  • Various map glitches fixed.
  • Weekly and Monthly leaderboards will now track all kills, deaths and assists properly (All Time leaderboards were not affected by his)
  • Added mixed hardcore playlist
  • Added mixed barebones playlist
  • Added 12 player versions of all playlists

Rcon notes:
BlackOpsRcon
Version 1.0.2.0

  • Reduced timeout values. Connect (or failure to connect is faster).
  • Added all white-listed dvars for Ranked and Unranked. Admins have rcon access to ALL available dvars.
  • Added Settings and Console tabs for Ranked servers.

  • Added version number to the title bar.
  • Fixed a bug where UI state didn’t persist after switching to another server.
  • Added “disconnect” button.
  • Fixed map “set” to not use admindvar.
  • Changed all dvars which could be possibly float, to float. Mostly these are time-type dvars.
  • Fixed bug where entering a value of zero for Message Duration would cause a unhandled exception error.
  • Truncated all message fields to 140 chars.

Call of Duty: Black Ops – A possible fix for Windows XP

Just posted this on the Call of Duty forums, so just basically trying to get as much of an audience as possible to try and help others.

I would just like to mention this in case someone else finds it helpful. My specs are below is anyone is interested. I have been reading up on trying to get my damn black ops to work, and now it does, thank god!

OK, well here’s what I have done

NOTE : This has worked for me and may not work for others.

Updated sound card to latest drivers
Downgraded graphic drivers to a more stable version – 197.45 and left at default settings
Changed these settings in the config

  • seta r_blur_allowed “0″
  • seta r_distortion “0″
  • seta r_dof_enable “0″
  • seta r_glow_allowed “0″
  • seta r_specular “0″

The rest of the config is default. You will need to write protect the config if you want these settings to stick.

My system specifications

  • Windows XP 32bit
  • AMD Athlon 5600 @ 3GHz <– thats right, it DOES NOT MEET MIN SPEC REQUIREMENTS (which is complete bs btw )
  • Corsair 4GB 2x 2GB TWIN2X4096-6400C5C PC6400 Ram @ 5-5-5-18 timings
  • Asus Nvidia 8800GT 256mb @ GPU – 600MHZ, MEMORY – 900MHZ, SHADER – 1500MHZ
  • Gigabyte M57SLI-S4

I hope this helps some users as it has got rid of my stuttering and crashing and memory problems ( what used to happen to me was the computer would crash due to a massive leak filling up the page file thus leaving nothing for windows, so the reset button had to be pressed )

I have just now run a fps benchmark using fraps and received the following;

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
31337, 399289, 44, 93, 78.482

Thats right, Im averaging 78fps with my system that is below Treyarchs minimum specifications!!

Kudos to his patience!

Just browsing the Call of  Duty forums and came across this post.  Check it out! This guy definately has patience! At the moment I’m in a debate with Activision at the moment that has been going on since 23/11/2010 ( there will be more on this once it’s all sorted out! ).

Hi, I’ve played Call of Duty since COD4, on PC mostly. I’ve known the games in and out since then and I’ve tried to be helpful to the community by posting on the steam forums, providing tips and performance fixes and so on. As we all now, there are multiple problems with Black Ops, some span all consoles, some span only specific ones, mostly PC. I understand that it is hard to develop a game this massive for 5 platforms in 2 years and you obviously did not have enough time or manpower to test it on a larger scale. However, we can all work together by identifying problems and finding a good way to fix these. Let’s move on to the problems and the simple solutions.

NOTE: This is a constructive way of thinking, I’m not ranting or complaining, just read and reply nicely.

ALL PLATFORMS: (excluding Wii and DS version)

  • Knifing range is too long, most people complain about this. Solution: divide it by two it and see how it works.
  • Snipers are underpowered. Solution. 2.0 head multipliers for all snipers and 1.5 lower body multiplier for the classified sniper.
  • Quickscopers are disappointed and regular people can barely use sniper rifles. Solution: Make sniping like pre-patch/COD4/WaW but keep the randomized crosshair so it is not at the center of the screen when the scope appears. The bullet should always go straight in the cross.
  • Footsteps are too quiet. Solution: increase the volume a bit, and disable sound occlusion? It’s just a performance hogger anyway.
  • Hardline pro affects all Air Drops. Solution: Make it only affect Care Packages
  • Infinite Airdrop/Care Package Glitch. Solution: Disable interruption of the marker throwing animation
  • Erratic Spawn System that will spawn enemies in your face, and behind you. Solution: Revise the spawn code/algorithm or make the player wait a bit until a spawn point is more secure.
  • Combat training cant be played offline. Solution: look into the options for this
  • Teamkillers in HC. Solution: Use Ricochet rules for all hardcore game modes
  • Second Chance abusers in HC soak up up to 3 bullets while in mid-air and can shoot you with pistol during this time. Solution: let them recover from the fall before they can shoot, like you did with the Dive-function. And take away the invincibility while in the air. Game breaking for HC
  • Drop-shots. Solution: Prevent shooting until player has settled from going prone
  • Bad Hitboxes, missing while aiming at stationary enemy. Solution: Revise the hitboxes again
  • People getting banned for emblems while there are actual hackers and cheaters out there. Solution: Get your priorities straight, the players care more about cheaters than “offensive” emblems

There are people who say some other guns are overpowered (famas, ak74u, stoner63 etc.) but i will leave their balancing up to Treyarch, i find it okay for now, except the snipers. I don’t think any of the perks are “gamebreaking” either so i will not suggest any changes except for second chance.

PS3:
- Lag and frame rate issues compared to the Xbox360 version. Solution: Hire a good PS3 programmer (maybe from old IW?) for a while with the enormous load of money you’ve just earned and let that person sort things out with your development team.

PC:
- Game is ported from console and is not utilizing PC architecture well, and does not match the requirements at all. Frame Rate, stuttering and sound issues. Solution: Hire a good PC developer (maybe from IW?) and rewrite some of the game code to allow more ram usage, optimization for dual or more cores and above all… GPU utilization. We don’t buy $500 graphics cards for no reason. And we will buy your games if you support our community, and will buy DLC if the game is not broken. We are not pirates. Console players swap discs between friends, we cant do that for multiplayer on PC. We can’t “try the game” before we buy it in most cases. So we have in almost all cases bought the game before we complain, making us a 1st hand paying customer.

  • People don’t know how to tweak their configs and may modify registry values and other things that can break the game and possibly ban them. Solution: Tell the PC gamers which CVARS are changeable and what they do, recommend certain settings for certain setups, or add them to the in-game settings menu. A lot of values from earlier COD games were missing such as DoF, Ragdoll and Smoothing of smoke edges which are all performance hoggers, you should not have to fiddle with configs for such basic things.
  • All servers are for 18 players most of the time, which the game was not meant to handle in all maps. Solution: Make 12-slot servers or playlists (which i know you are working on). Free-For-All Games on PC are impossible to handle with more than 12 players because of the spawns.
  • Crashes and lock-ups. Solution: Revise Game Code
  • Progress Rollback issues. Solution: Revise Netcode and don’t rely on steam or a master server to stream stats to players, The MW2 progress saving and COD4 and WaW saving worked well, I would suggest that the client should only upload progress to steam or the mastersrver, not download. People who hack their profiles will be banned anyway.
  • Playing with friends is hard and you don’t get to choose team. Solution: I have two options here. Either enable team choosing and rearranging during first 20 seconds of a match, with disabled auto-balance, where new players will join the team with less players. OR… use the black light tango down system where people with the same clan tag end up on the same team and stay there during auto-balance.
  • We cant edit classes between matches, but could do this in earlier games. Solution: Try to bring it back

And lastly… the community needs more interaction with the community manager, he should be on these forums, discussing with players on a daily basis, since it is his job. You probably read a lot, but we need confirmation, in writing, in official statements and so on. Don’t let Activision hold you back from communicating because that will only hurt your developer status among the consumers, players and fans.

I think you have done a great job with the game, in too little time and i hope you will support this game way more that Treyarch and IW has done in the past, It will be great, and everyone will play and enjoy it in the long run, maybe years from now. Don’t let us down, best regards!
