Three Peaks – What happened?

As you know I was going to attempt the National UK three peak challenge with several of my colleagues from work. July 4th was the date picked for the challenge, but we decided to head up to Scotland on the 2nd to have some social time drinking and having a look around the local area.

We left from work at 6.30am, which was just after I finished my 12 hour shift. I was quite surprised by the lack of traffic on the journey. We hit the morning rush, but even that wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be.

We hit the border of Scotland at 4.20pm after a couple of stops to change drivers / breakfast and fag breaks, and arrived at our chalet shortly after 7pm.

Our first port of call after checking into the chalet was to find out where the local shop was, and to grab some drinks for the nights entertainment.

After dinner the drinking games began. I ended up drinking close to three quarters of a litre of vodka, half a bottle of Mikey Finns, and a glass of Disaronno and God only knows what the others drank!

Needless to say it got very messy. None of us got any sleep until around 6.30pm the next day.

We started our three peak challenge with Ben Nevis as one normally would. The weather wasn’t that great. It was raining and very gusty. Unfortunately I never managed to get up to the top of Ben Nevis, but managed to get about 3/4 of the way up before having to turn around due to the issues I was having with my chest and breathing. The others however managed to get up to the very top, which was good. I did however manage to get some photos.

After everyone managed to come back down Ben Nevis in one piece we headed off on our travels to Scafell Pike. Sadly because my chest was still bad from going up Ben Nevis I didn’t attempt this one. Neither did Danielle because of her knee, but Billy and Pat did. We got there just before sun down and the boys headed off up the second mountain.

By the time they had made any significant progress the light had disappeared and they were finding it hard to navigate with only head torches to enable them to see where they were going. Sadly they didn’t make it to the top of the mountain as they must have taken a wrong turn somewhere along their route, and were stopped in their tracks by a deep stream that they felt was too fast flowing and deep to cross safely.

After the boys came back down we headed off to Wales to start our journey up Mount Snowdon.

As my chest and Daniells knee were feeling much better we all attempted Snowdon. We arrived at the base of the mountain at around 5am. We prepared ourselves, got hydrated, and had our pre walk toilet time! We all decided that as we haven’t managed to complete all of the mountains finishing this last one in a quick time was off the table, and we would take the time to enjoy the walk and views, and thats exactly what we did! Check out the photos from this one!

So, that was our trip. Although we didn’t actually complete the three peak challenge we really enjoyed the experience.
